Discover our recommendations to follow after your oral surgery

Following any surgical procedure (e.g., wisdom teeth extraction), observing a number of precautions promotes a smooth healing process and reduces the risk of complications.

1. Advice to Follow After the Procedure

  • Follow the prescriptions provided in the prescription for the entire specified duration.
  • Begin mouth rinses or any other rinsing 24 hours after the procedure (to protect the blood clot).
  • When the effects of anesthesia wear off, it is normal to experience slight pain and see slight bleeding, which may persist for one or two days. If bleeding persists, firmly apply pressure (by biting down) with a folded gauze pad on the affected area for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues after this period, call the clinic.
  • If you typically experience swelling, place an ice pack in a cloth and apply it to the cheek on the affected side for 30 minutes every hour during the first day after the procedure. Pre-made ice packs are also available at pharmacies.
  • You can resume your normal daily activities. However, avoid intense physical exercise for the first 48 hours. Mild fatigue for 1 to 3 days is normal.
  • Stop or significantly reduce your tobacco consumption for at least 4 days.

2. Diet: What to Prioritize and Avoid

Don’t let your stomach remain empty: during the first few days, prefer soft or semi-liquid foods, preferably cold or lukewarm. Eating is also mandatory when taking painkillers.

  • Avoid pastries, dried fruits, and spices.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Prioritize soups, fish, minced meat, mashed vegetables, bananas, ice cream, etc.

3. Hygiene

Practice normal hygiene (gently around the operated area) to avoid the accumulation of bacterial plaque, including on the sutures.

If multiple sutures were to loosen, do not worry. Perform two mouth rinses daily for one week (1 minute in the mouth in the operated area), starting from the day after.

If you have a reason for concern, do not hesitate to call your clinic or the dental emergency number at 058 234 00 00.
